For decades I have sought a dream, till thirty thousand strands of hair turned to snow. The Strategies of the Kaiyuan era astonished both Heaven and men; within court and countryside alike, fond remembrance abides, and in the annals of history, a name remains. Yet in later years, storms and tempests mocked me, Heaven decreeing that my wishes should not be fulfilled. The hearts of men weigh heavy, and the heart of the Way lies shattered; the youth may behold the man grown old. Thus beneath the skies abides eternal lament. Now it is told of the affair of the Chamberlain Lu Huaishen, that Emperor Xuanzong was greatly stricken with grief, and even in the depth of night he reproached himself without cease, unable to find repose.
