The reason I came to see her, aside from telling her that Su Yan couldn’t make it, was really to protect her. Knowing Zhang Ming’s scheming nature, he might very well use Wang Mengyun to get at Liu Dazhuang. Don’t think he doesn’t have the guts—when people are pushed to the edge, they’ll do anything. Especially someone like Zhang Ming, ruthless as he is, who wouldn’t hesitate to kill!
I stayed at Liu Dazhuang’s place until four in the afternoon, when the phone at his house finally rang. I quickly ran to answer it.
“Hello, is that you, Dazhuang?”
“It’s me!”
“Well? How did it go?”
“We got him!” Liu Dazhuang said. “We had all the officers chase him for miles before finally catching him!”
“Good!” I let out a sigh of relief. “The rest is in your hands, Dazhuang.”
“Don’t worry. Let me talk to Mengyun.”
I handed the phone to Wang Mengyun and stepped aside, my mind racing with everything that would come next. Knowing Liu Dazhuang’s temperament, he’d use this opportunity to bring Zhang Ming down for good. Hit-and-run, attempted murder—just those two charges alone were enough to make Zhang Ming pay. Who knows what other crimes might come to light during his escape.
When Wang Mengyun hung up, she asked, “Will Su Yan die?”
I didn’t answer her, because I wasn’t sure myself.
Seeing that I stayed silent, she seemed to understand and simply said, “Alright.” She didn’t press further but instead told her, “For the time being, Dazhuang’s gonna be busy, Mengyun. He won’t be around to look out for you as much.”
“It’s alright; I still have you, don’t I?” Wang Mengyun smiled warmly.
“I’m planning to leave here,” I told her directly, not holding anything back. I had planned to say goodbye anyway.
“Leave here? Where are you going?” she asked, a little surprised.
“I’m heading to Guangji Mansion in Hancheng City to find my senior sister,” I replied.
“When are you leaving?” Her tone softened.
I thought for a moment. “Tomorrow.”
There was a hint of reluctance in her voice as she said, “Alright then, I won’t try to keep you. Just promise you’ll come back and visit when you can.”
I smiled back. “Don’t worry, Mengyun. For someone like me, always wandering the world, it’s only a matter of time before I come back around.”
She chuckled softly. “Fair enough.”
“Oh, here.” I reached into my jacket and took out a small scented pouch. Inside was a charm I had drawn. “Mengyun, I want you to have this.”
“What’s this?” She took it, curious, and examined it.
“It’s a protective charm. Keep it with you, and I guarantee no evil spirit will get close to you,” I said with a reassuring grin.
“Alright, I’ll take it,” she said, smiling.
After saying my goodbyes to Wang Mengyun, I didn’t go back to the guesthouse. Instead, I headed to the police station. I knew Zhang Ming wouldn’t be getting off easy, but I wanted to see for myself what shape he was in now.
By the time I got to the station, night had already fallen. A few officers were gathered, eating together, and Liu Hui was among them.
“Xiaofeng!” Liu Hui spotted me and hurried over with a grin. “What brings you here—looking for Liu?”
“Yes!” I replied, adding, “Are you feeling alright? Any discomfort?”
“No, no, I feel great!” Liu Hui said, rolling his shoulders to show he was fine.
Honestly, I wasn’t completely sure the Heavenly Needle would fully heal his injuries. It was my first time using it, so I wanted to check in with him.
“Just hang on a bit; Liu’s questioning an important person right now!” Liu Hui said.
“Important person?” I asked.
“Yeah, Liu’s scored big this time! You know who he caught?” Liu Hui grinned, trying to build suspense.
“Zhang Ming from the Tongming Group,” I replied casually.
The smile dropped from his face. “How do you know that?”
“Xiaofeng, what brings you here?” Liu Dazhuang’s voice cut in.
“Of course, I came to ask about Zhang Ming,” I replied.
Liu Dazhuang walked over to his desk, picked up a cup, and poured himself some water. “The interrogation just started, and I’m making sure he doesn’t slip through this time!”
“Got a good case against him?” I asked.
“Oh, absolutely. Just the fact he purposely drove into someone qualifies as attempted murder. He better pray Su Yan survives. If she doesn’t, he’s as good as gone.”
“You know more about this than I do. Just don’t let someone like him walk away free.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll make him spill everything he knows, including all the dirt the Tongming Group’s been hiding over the years!” Liu Dazhuang took a sip of water and continued, “I’ve already got Feng Xiao sorting through Tongming’s records, and I don’t intend to let Zhang Ming make bail.”
Liu Hui gave him a thumbs-up. “You’re the man, Liu!”
“Think I could see him?” I asked.
“Of course.” Liu Dazhuang set down his cup and led the way out. As we passed Liu Hui, I said, “Oh, and by the way, Liu—figuring it out was easy. I just calculated it.”
In the interrogation room, I finally saw Zhang Ming, handcuffed and sitting there in a daze. His clothes were disheveled, and he looked tense—so different from the high-and-mighty image he once had.
When he saw me enter, he slammed his hand on the table, pointing right at my face as he cursed, “Wang Xiaofeng, you bastard! This is all because of you! If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be sitting here!”
“What’s with the yelling? Sit down!” Liu Dazhuang barked.
Zhang Ming kept on swearing, “Just you wait! When I get out of here, I’m gonna make sure you’re dead!”
“Are you out of your mind?” Liu Dazhuang shoved him back down.
“Brother Dazhuang, let me have a word with him alone,” I said.
Liu Dazhuang shot me a cautious look, clearly unsure.
“It’s fine. Trust me,” I assured him.
“Alright, I’ll be right outside. Just call if anything happens,” he said, finally stepping out.
“Got it,” I replied.
Once Liu Dazhuang left, I sat down across from Zhang Ming. As I looked at him in his current state, surprisingly, I didn’t feel any satisfaction. Instead, a sense of pity washed over me.
All these years, I’ve read countless fortunes, met endless people, and even encountered a fair share of ghosts. The more I see, the more I realize that people can be far more terrifying than any ghost.
Take Zhang Ming sitting in front of me now. To achieve his goals, he’d stop at nothing, treating anyone as a tool to be used or discarded. Killing didn’t even faze him.
“Do you regret any of it?” I asked.
He scoffed. “You’re kidding, right?”
“Even now, you feel no remorse?”
“Remorse for what? Did I do something wrong?”
“Nothing wrong?” I stood up, raising my voice. “How many people have you killed? Li Hongmin, Zhou Yong, and now Su Yan today.” I clenched my fists and added, “And let’s not forget your own wife, Liu Qing!”
“That wretched woman! She deserved it!” Zhang Ming spat coldly.
“You scumbag!” I grabbed him by the collar, my voice harsh. “And what about Zhang Guofa? Did he deserve to die too?”
The only reason I brought him up was that Zhang Guofa’s death was pointless. He was nothing more than a pawn, sacrificed in Zhang Ming’s ploy against Liu Dazhuang.
“Didn’t he?” Zhang Ming sneered. “He’s the one who wanted that fish tank. I didn’t force him to buy it. It’s just his bad luck—an old fool stumbling right into trouble at the worst possible moment.”
“Son of a bitch!” I threw a punch right at his face, sending him crashing to the floor, blood streaming from his nose.
“Wang Xiaofeng, how dare you hit me! You just wait—I swear I’ll kill you when I get out of here! I’ll feast on your flesh and drink your blood!!!”
“You won’t have the chance to get out!” I snapped, slamming the door as I stormed out.
