During the rebellion of Yu Qi, men were slaughtered like hemp. A villager named Li Hualong had fled into the mountains and was now making his way back home. He happened to run into an imperial army unit marching at night. Fearing that he might be killed in the indiscriminate slaughter, he panicked and found nowhere to hide. He lay stiff among a pile of corpses, pretending to be dead.

After the soldiers had all passed, he still dared not get up at once. Suddenly he saw the headless and arm‑less corpses rise to their feet like a forest. Among them, one corpse still had its severed head hanging from its shoulder. It spoke, saying, “The wild dog is coming. What shall we do?” The other corpses answered in a ragged chorus, “What shall we do?” In a moment, they all collapsed to the ground, and silence fell again.

Li was trembling with terror and was about to get up when a creature arrived. It had the head of a beast and the body of a man. It crouched down and began biting off human heads, sucking out the brains one by one. Li was petrified and hid his head under a corpse. The creature came to Li, pushed at his shoulder, and tried to get at his head. Li pressed himself down as hard as he could so that the creature could not reach it. The creature then pushed the covering corpse aside, and Li’s head was exposed.

Now Li was terrified beyond measure. With his hand, he groped under his own body and found a stone as big as a bowl. He clutched it tight. The creature bent down to bite his head, and Li suddenly sprang up, let out a great shout, and smashed the stone against the creature’s head. He struck its mouth. The creature screeched like an owl, covered its mouth, and fled in pain, spitting blood on the road.

Li went over to look. In the blood he found two teeth. They were curved in the middle and sharp at both ends, each more than four inches long. He tucked them into his robe and took them home to show people, but no one knew what creature they had come from.
